Magic, some gaming, the roll of a dice, and moments that made me smile–what more do you want in a urban fantasy novella. In this case, MORE! In the crowded urban fantasy field these days it’s hard to make the world and the story feel fresh and unique, but that’s exactly what the author has done with a heroine who is old enough to have an adult child, a horrifying past for Chicago, and characters that leap off the page. If this novella is designed to give readers a taste and leave them wanting more, then it’s certainly done it’s job. I sincerely hope that there are more stories with these characters and set in this world, because I feel like there’s so much more to explore.
However, beyond that it’s clear to me this author has done the homework and knows the assignment well. From gaming references that feel real, even if they’re fictionalized systems and book titles, to magical languages and references to lost cultures, there’s a lot for a reader to sink their teeth into. And again, that’s a good thing, because it sets this book apart from fluffy magic occult and gives the reader the feeling that the author has a real appreciation for the genre and its fans.
